Things to Avoid
Avoid these things to simplify your life
Foods that people might find unusual or are less likely to be familiar with.
Guacamole (and anything else that goes bad quickly)
Healthy Food
Unless you're organizing an event centered on health, the primary challenge with healthy food is that many people don't find it appealing (or don't prefer it). Nevertheless, it's advisable to include some healthier options alongside other offerings. Having a few healthy choices enables your guests to feel better about indulging a little.
Snacks
For events with multiple parts, it's common to offer snacks during the breaks.

Timing
Clearly specify in writing the exact timing for serving salads, main courses, and desserts. Upon arrival, verify these details with the person in charge to address any pre-event arrangements. Ensure that these instructions are adhered to during the event.
Make sure to distinguish between "when you should start serving x" and "when x should be on all of the tables." These are distinct concepts, and if everyone isn't clear on your expectations, the timing for the evening will be disrupted.
How do you want to handle the food?
Initially, you need to choose whether to prepare a full meal or opt for a snack, appetizer, or hors d'oeuvres. Many people overthink this choice, but it's really not a major issue.
Next, you need to choose whether you prefer a service style or a buffet.
Take-home Boxes

The type of event you're hosting may influence whether you offer take-home boxes. For more formal gatherings, this might be less suitable for guests. However, it's almost always appropriate to provide them for staff, who often appreciate taking home delicious leftovers, especially since they typically aren't highly paid.
Note
Food has to look appealing.
Think through the timing of food service.
Stay away from pork for most events.
Make sure you have enough food.
Match food quality to the level of the event.
Be sure you have proper serving and individual utensils.
Choose food that match event activities.
For dessert, when in doubt, go with chocolate.
Be ready to deal with special needs, such as people who need vegetarian and gluten-free food.
Avoid "healthy" food; most people do not really want it.
